Hebdo attack powers mass conversion to Islam

The number of converts to Islam has dramatically increased after the Paris attack on the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly.
According to reports in IINA, a surge in the number of people converting to Islam reached 40 in January 2015 compared to 22 certificates granted “Conversion to Islam Certificates” in January 2014, reported the Grand Mosque of Paris.
Following the attack in Paris, Muslims may find themselves even more isolated and feared by their fellow citizens and were also apprehensive that the incident would once again give rise to an atmosphere of Islamophobia in the country.
But, quite the opposite had happened, there was an unexpected increase in sales of copies of the Holy Qur’an over the weeks that followed the attack and there was unpredicted increase in conversions to Islam in France, confirmed a RTL Radio confirmed, based on its own sources.
An increase in number of converts to Islam is also observed in Mosques of major cities of France.
According to a radio report, there is an increase of 20 percent in number of Muslim converts in Lyon and Strasbourg, in comparison to the previous year.
“The confusion between terrorism and Islam after Charlie Hebdo incident has prompted me to convert to this religion to show that Islam is not a religion of such atrocities,” young French who converted to Islam was quoted as saying:
As per an official at the Paris Mosque, the converts to Islam represented people from all walks of life, including principals, doctors, teachers and policemen etc.

300 rape cases filed in Delhi in 2 months

In what is being seen as a disturbing trend, Delhi Police has registered 300 FIRs of rape in the first two months of this year. This indicates that on an average, five rape cases are lodged every day in the
city. Last year, the number of FIRs filed stood at 2,069.If molestation cases are added, this year`s figure will be double. In the first two months of 2015, the number of FIRs registered under sections of 354 and 509 (molestation and outraging modesty of women) of IPC is over 500, police officers say.Despite measures like making quick arrests and lodging FIR verbatim on the basis of a woman`s complaint, the situation on the ground has not changed much, activists say.Recently, Delhi Police launched Himmat, an app which allows women to send distress signals to the police control room with a touch on the screen of their smartphones. A WhatsApp group has also been launched through which women can send the picture of the taxi/autorickshaw they are hiring to the police. Besides these, police have also started self-defence programmes for women in almost all districts of the city.Police say more than 90% of the rapes are committed by neighbours, friends, acquaintances or relatives. Several cases of rape have been found to have been registered due to personal enmity, sources say. But in all cases, the cops claim to have taken swift and exemplary actions with time-bound solving the case and filing of the chargesheet.Women rights activists say there is no deterrence and the growing number of cases of rape reported are due to the fact that the women are now more aware of the law. They also cite instances where they had to interfere to get cases registered."There is definitely an increase in the number of complaints registered by women, but I feel they are due to the increased level of awareness and not due to the free registration of cases. No doubt, the police played a role in it but still there are cases in the recent past where we had to approach senior police officials to have cases of sexual assault against minors registered," says Kavita Krishnan, secretary, All India Progressive Women`s Association.

Saudi Arabia becomes world’s biggest defense importer

Saudi Arabia has passed India to become the world’s biggest arms importer last year as concerns about Iran’s ambitions increase tensions in the Middle East. Saudi spending rose 54 percent to $6.5 billion last year, while India imported $5.8 billion, according to data released Sunday by IHS, a leading analyst of the global arms trade. Imports will increase 52 percent to $9.8 billion this year, accounting for $1 of every $7 spent globally, IHS estimated, based on planned deliveries. “This is definitely unprecedented,” said Ben Moores, the report’s author. “You’re seeing political fractures across the region, and at the same time you’ve got oil, which allows countries to arm themselves, protect themselves and impose their will as to how they think the region should develop.” Saudi Arabia is building its arsenal amid concern about a geopolitical shift in the Middle East as the United States looks for help in fighting the Islamic State group, said David Cortright, director of policy studies at the University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Negotiators are nearing a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and lift sanctions against the country, which would create new opportunities for economic development and threaten Saudi Arabia’s longstanding ties with the United States. The biggest beneficiary of the growing Middle Eastern market was the United States, with $8.4 billion of arms shipments to the region last year, up from $6 billion in 2013. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates imported a combined $8.7 billion of defense systems last year — more than all of Western Europe. Boosting arms purchases may be a way for some elements in the Saudi government to remind the U.S. of its importance as an ally because defense contracts translate into jobs that are critical to many communities, Cortright said. Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, all based in the U.S., were the three biggest arms exporters among companies last year, according to the IHS Global Defense Trade Report. “It may be a way of tempering that rapprochement with Iran,” Cortright said. “You can think of it as … deepening ties in a time of uncertainty, as a possibly greater role with Iran looms on the horizon.” The Saudis are also worried about the rise of Islamic State and are cooperating with the U.S.- led coalition. “From an objective security perspective, Saudi Arabia should be cooperating with Iran to deter and push back ISIS in Iraq. The old ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ approach,” Cortright said. “But Saudi Arabia has deep ideological and geopolitical differences with Iran that prevent it from considering such a temporary marriage of convenience.” A deal on Iran’s nuclear program also may fuel the longstanding sectarian conflict between Saudi Arabia, where the Sunni branch of Islam is dominant, and largely Shiite Iran. Iran is actively supporting fighters in Syria and Iraq and is backing Shiite rebels in Yemen, which toppled the country’s government last month. “We’ve all been waiting for the storm in the Middle East,” Moores said. Until recently, Saudi procurement programs were limited by the country’s ability to use advanced systems, Moores said. But with a growing number of educated and technologically agile people, the Saudis can now make use of increasingly high-tech hardware. Globally, trade in military hardware rose for a sixth straight year in 2014, pushing worldwide imports to $64.4 billion from $56 billion. The U.S. remained the biggest arms exporter, with shipments rising 19 percent to $23.7 billion. Russia ranked second at $10 billion, up 9 percent from 2013. France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Israel, China, Spain and Canada rounded out the top 10. India was the second-biggest defense importer in 2014, followed by China, the UAE, Taiwan, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, and Turkey. IHS Inc., based in Englewood, Colorado, is a provider of global market, industry and technical analysis.

Mamata meets PM, backs Teesta accord and border agreement

In her first official engagement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee extended her help to implement the Indo-Bangladesh Land Border Agreement and took a positive approach on inking the Teesta water pact.Mamata’s first exclusive meeting with Modi, nine months after the new government came to power, lasted for almost half-an-hour.The PM is expected to go to Bangladesh this year and the signing of the Teesta accord — to share its water with Bangladesh — is expected to boost bilateral ties tremendously. The meet was followed by delegation-level talks between the PM and his officials, and Mamata’s 40-member team comprising mostly of party MPs. Over here she brought up an appeal for debt and interest relief, arguing that she had inherited the loan burden from the Left government. While not committing to any debt relief, the PM pointed out to the recent “unprecedented” increase in states’ shares in central taxes from 32% to 42%.The PM also pointed out that the Union government has decided to give West Bengal the royalty on coal and other minerals, which would provide additional revenue of almost `1,600 crore to the state annually. “West Bengal will get `11,200 crore from the coal blocks that have been auctioned so far,” said a press release from the prime minister’s office.Modi to embark on 5-day tour tomorrow.Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a five-day visit to Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka Tuesday. Amid speculation this was an effort to counter Chinese influence, Delhi was quick to caution that relations with these states were historical and based on people to people ties. He will be the first Indian PM to pay a bilateral visit to Sri Lanka in 28 years when he arrives in Colombo on March 13. He is scheduled to meet top leaders in the country and address parliament.

Iraqi forces push Islamic State out of al-Baghdadi

Iraqi security forces backed by coalition airstrikes have pushed the Islamic State out of a town near a large base where U.S. military advisers are located, officials announced Friday.
A combination of Iraqi armed forces and tribes retook a police station and three bridges over the Euphrates River in the town of al-Baghdadi, according to a statement from U.S.-led coalition headquarters. The bridges have been held by militants since last September. The militants had gained control of the town at one point in the past few months.
The statement said Iraqi security forces also pushed militants from seven villages northwest of al-Baghdadi in the largely Sunni Anbar province.
The coalition has launched 26 airstrikes since Feb. 22 to support the offensive against the militants in the area. It also provided surveillance and intelligence support.
The town is several miles from al-Asad, a sprawling military compound where militants last month launched a failed effort to breach the U.S. base.
The base in the Euphrates River Valley west of Baghdad is a major training facility where teams of Americans are training about 800 Iraqi soldiers.

South Korea US envoy Lippert 'well' after knife attack

A militant Korean nationalist has slashed the face of the US ambassador to South Korea at a breakfast meeting in Seoul, but the envoy was not seriously hurt.
Mark Lippert, 42, was also cut on his left hand, with blood spattered over the breakfast table.
Security officers subdued the attacker, one pinning him down with a shoe on his neck, until he was arrested.
North Korea has described the attack as "just punishment for US warmongers".
The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said he had delivered a "knife shower of justice".
The attacker has been named as Kim Ki-jong.
South Korean police, who are in the process of obtaining warrants to search his home, are seeking to establish whether he has close ties with the North, the BBC's Stephen Evans reports from Seoul.
Mr Lippert had hospital treatment but later wrote in a tweet: "Doing well and in great spirits... Will be back ASAP to advance US-ROK [Republic of Korea] alliance!"
US President Barack Obama called his ambassador to wish him "the very best for a speedy recovery", a US official said.
Nobody believes that pro-North Korean groups represent a majority of South Koreans but they are still a significant minority and part of the political landscape.
In November, South Korea's constitutional court ordered that the Unified Progressive Party be dissolved even though it had five members elected to parliament. The authorities said the UPP posed a threat to South Korean democracy. One of its leaders was jailed.
The counter-argument of the leftist nationalists is not so much that they want to be ruled by Pyongyang or fall under a North Korean system but that the American military presence in South Korea perpetuates a division within one people - the Korean people.
The strong feelings of pro-Pyongyang activists become most obvious when anti-Pyongyang activists launch balloons into the North loaded with propaganda messages. The two sides confront each other, with much jostling and shouting. There was a small pro-US demonstration after the attack on the ambassador but some on the streets of the capital said they applauded it.
line
The US state department said it strongly condemned the incident which South Korean President Park Guen-hye described as an "attack on the South Korea-US alliance".
Witnesses say the attacker, a 55-year-old man with a history of militant Korean nationalistic activism, shouted demands for North and South Korea to be reunified.
A small group of South Koreans held a protest against the attack outside the hospital where Mr Lippert was treated, waving placards which read "Mark Lippert, Cheer up!" and "Korea-US relationship is solid".

Samsung unveils sleek new Galaxy phones to take on Apple

Designed from scratch in an operation dubbed "Project Zero", the Galaxy S6 and its curved-edges variant are critical for Samsung's plans to reverse plunging smartphone revenues that led to its first annual earnings fall in three years in 2014.

By some estimates, Apple surpassed Samsung as the world's biggest smartphone maker late last year, selling a record 74.5 million iPhones in the December quarter on the back of the success of its big-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Samsung's previous flagship Galaxy S5 was outsold in its second full month of global sales by Apple's older iPhone 5S, according to researcher Counterpoint.

The South Korean giant begins its fight-back on April 10 when the revamped Galaxy phones, unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday, hit the market in one of the most important product launches in the company's history.

Samsung is yet to disclose pricing or where the phones will appear first.

Stand-out features include casing made from light-weight metal used in airplanes, a step up from the plastic that disappointed many critics of the S5, and Corning Inc's Gorilla Glass on both front and back.

The Galaxy S6 upgrades the previous version's camera and screen, and strips out many of Samsung's unpopular in-house software apps that infuriated users by gobbling memory.

It and the Galaxy S6 edge will also be powered by Samsung’s new 64-bit, 14-nanometre Exynos processors.

The phones are also the first from Samsung to support wireless charging as a standard feature.
In another departure, they have non-removable batteries to make them slimmer.

To compensate for the lack of interchangeable batteries, Samsung says a 10-minute charge by cord gives four hours of power.

Samsung is also touting the Galaxy S6's compatibility with a new mobile payments system it is preparing to launch in the United States and South Korea in the second half of this year, using the technology of recently acquired start-up LoopPay.

The system, in partnership with banks and credit card companies including MasterCard and Visa, will allow users to make mobile payments through magnetic strip-card readers without the additional accessory needed for other models.

The rival Apple Pay system, launched in the United States in September and rapidly winning retailer support, requires the installation of in-store near-field communication technology.

The new Samsung flagships will also come with free two-year, 115-gigabyte cloud storage through Microsoft Corp's OneDrive, suggesting improved relations between the firms after they settled a patent dispute last month.         abd71

Revealed: How torture was used to foil al-Qaeda 2010 plot to bomb two airliners 17 minutes before explosion

The former head of MI6 has said torturing suspected terrorists produces “useful information”, as The Independent on Sunday reveals that “real-time” intelligence understood to have been obtained by torture in Saudi Arabia helped to thwart a terrorist bombing on British soil.
In his first interview since stepping down from Secret Intelligence Service in January, Sir John Sawers told the BBC yesterday that torture “does produce intelligence” and security services “set aside the use of torture… because it is against the values” of British society, not because it doesn’t work in the short term. Sir John defended the security services against accusations they had played a role in the radicalising of British Muslims, including Mohammed Emwazi, who it is claimed is the extremist responsible for the murder of hostages in Syria.
The IoS can reveal details of a dramatic “Jack Bauer real-time operation” to foil an al-Qaeda plot to bring down two airliners in 2010. According to a well-place intelligence source, the discovery of a printer cartridge bomb on a UPS cargo aircraft at East Midlands airport was possible only because two British government officials in Saudi Arabia were in “immediate communication” with a team reportedly using torture to interrogate an al-Qaeda operative as part of “ticking bomb scenario” operation.
The terror plot was to use cartridge bombs to bring down two aircraft over the eastern United States. However, British authorities intercepted the first device at the cargo airport hub after what they described as a “tip-off” from Saudi Arabia. A second device was intercepted aboard a freight plane in Dubai; both aircraft had started their trips in Yemen.
The IoS understands there was a frantic search prompted by “tw
The human rights group Cage said the use of torture by MI5 and MI6 allegedly played a role in radicalising young British Muslims, including Michael Adebolajo, convicted of murdering soldier Lee Rigby in London in 2013. In the interview, Sir John said blaming the security services for radicalisation was “specious” and offered a vigorous defence of the methods used by MI5 and MI6. He said torture had been used for “thousands of years in order to extract useful information”.
He said: “The whole problem about torture and maltreatment is sadly is that it does produce intelligence. And that’s why in a civilised society like ours we have to set aside certain methods, even though they might be effective in the short term. In the longer term they are very counterproductive; they are undermining the values of our society.”
Shami Chakrabarti, the director of campaign group Liberty, said: “That is a low ebb, even for a senior spook in this country. After 9/11, I could have predicted internment without charge or trial. I could predict more invasions of privacy and blanket surveillance, but the one thing I could never have predicted is in 2015 we would be having to talk about torture in the UK.”
o or three” calls to Saudi Arabia after the tip-off, with security services battling to find the device. French security sources revealed the device was within 17 minutes of detonating when bomb disposal teams disarmed it.
One intelligence source said: “The people in London went back on the phone two or three times to where the interrogation was taking place in Riyadh to find out specifically where the bomb was hidden. There were two Britons there, in immediate communication with where the interrogation was taking place, and as soon as anything happened, they were in touch with the UK. It was all done in real time.”There is growing frustration on the part of some UK security officials at Britain’s lack of candour about aspects of intelligence work. “There is a lack of understanding in that most people, if they knew about a ticking bomb scenario, would say torture was defensible, yet we insist on saying ‘we never do it’. Yet we are very happy beneficiaries of it,” one official said.
According to a source close to the East Midlands bomb operation, the British officials “would have made sure they were not actually in the room” where the torture was allegedly taking place, but there was “no way” the intelligence that thwarted the bombing “wasn’t procured under duress”. “It is a fair inference to say he was being tortured. He wasn’t volunteering the information, that’s for sure,” the source said. “Of course we use intelligence from torture. We take it from wherever we can get it, but we are never, ever going to say ‘we don’t want that’. Or ask too many questions about where it has come from. It is the difference between intelligence and evidence.”
Earlier this month, in what aides confirmed as a reference to the plot, Prime Minister David Cameron alluded to a “piece of information” from Saudi Arabia that “saved potentially hundreds of lives”.

A bad week for the Greens: Leader Natalie Bennett's 'car crash' radio interview is followed by Brighton council's failure to set a budget due to infighting

Are the Greens mad? That is a fair question after a week in which the party leader had a very public meltdown live on national radio and was immediately slapped down by a colleague at her own shambolic press conference.
And in Brighton – the only place in the country where they have actual power – the council has failed to set a budget because of Greens voting against their own party.
Are these passionate and principled people, who are preparing for a conference in Liverpool this week, what British politics so desperately needs? (The belief that they might be lay behind the surge in membership at the start of the year, which took them past the Lib Dems and Ukip.)
Or are the Greens – with apologies to Kermit the Frog – a bunch of muppets, who have no idea how
“All of us can have a bad day,” says Caroline Lucas, who won Brighton Pavilion at the last election and became the party’s first MP. She used to be leader but handed over to Natalie Bennett, who gave one of the worst political interviews of all time on Tuesday. “She undoubtedly had a bad day. It was excruciatingly embarrassing. She should have been on top of the figures and wasn’t, but we are human. These things do happen.”
Natalie Bennett coughed and spluttered and left long embarrassing pauses and forgot how much it would cost to build half a million new affordable homes, and how the party would pay for it. “Don’t you think you should have genned up on this a bit more?” asked the politely insistent host Nick Ferrari of LBC Radio. She coughed and spluttered some more.
to get things done, let alone how to pay for them?
Bennett apologised almost immediately after her self-confessed “brain freeze”. You could argue that it will do her no great harm in the long run, because what people who might vote for her party want is human beings who act and feel like the rest of us and not like the “robots” of other Westminster parties. At least that is what Greens hope. But the real problem is that Bennett sounded as if she thought the detail didn’t really matter, or at least she didn’t expect to be asked, because the Greens have been used to acting as a pressure group, shouting high-minded aspirations from the sidelines and urging mainstream parties to do better, rather than having actually to cost and do things.
The touchy-feely election brochure just published talks of rebuilding the economy to make it fairer, taking climate change seriously, sorting out the NHS and public transport and ensuring kids have a good education. Greens call these vaguely stated aspirations “the politics of hope”.
The European Union (EU) has said that the victims of violence in Bangladesh deserve proper justice. It said the perpetrators, whoever they are, must be identified, brought to justice and receive a fair trial.
“Victims of violence deserve proper justice…there was a fruitful discussion on the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights as fundamental instruments for de-escalating political tensions,” according to a media release issued by the EU Delegation to Bangladesh on Saturday. The EU and Bangladesh held the three sub-groups under the framework of the 2001 Cooperation Agreement - governance, human rights and migration, trade and development cooperation on February 26-27 in the city. The discussions were open and constructive, and allowed an exchange of views on a wide range of issues the EU reiterated the importance of protecting human rights defenders.

Uncertainty dogs Obama’s immigration plans

US President Barack Obama faces a tough political and legal battle to drive through an amnesty for five million illegal immigrants, but uncertainty may prove as big a hurdle as Congress or the courts.
Sitting opposite Obama in the Oval Office on February 4, 19-year-old Mexico-born Steven Arteaga felt confident his mother, an illegal immigrant, would soon be able to come out of the shadows.
Arteaga himself received protection from deportation in 2013, part of an Obama initiative to grant amnesty to kids brought over the border.
Last November, Obama issued a presidential order extending the program to a bigger pool of undocumented youngsters, and to the undocumented parents of American citizens.
Because Arteaga’s sister was born in the United States, his mother—who has been living illegally in the United States for almost two decades—could now come forward.
“It really meant a great deal for me,” Arteaga told AFP.
“Growing up, I would always have a fear that either I would come home and she wouldn’t be there, or I wouldn’t make it home—that something would happen and one of us might get deported.”
When the Department of Homeland Security was to start accepting applications on February 18, he was ready to file his mother’s request.
But while Arteaga sat in the White House, highlighting the people behind the policies, Republicans fought a rear-guard action in court and in Congress to overturn the extension.
Two days before the program’s start, 26 states—all but two Republican-governed—convinced a Texas judge to block Obama’s order.
Republicans accused him of effectively ruling by decree.
“The president said 22 times he did not have the authority to take the very action on immigration he eventually did,” said House Speaker John Boehner.
“So it is no surprise that at least one court has agreed.”
Obama’s Justice Department has said it will appeal, but the issue is likely to be in limbo before a higher court takes up the case.
“It probably does need to get to the Supreme Court,” said Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.
“The actions that the president wants to undertake are illegal. This is a pretty fundamental question of separation of powers, it really is a constitutional question.”

Political fight
On Wednesday, Obama will make the political case for reform in Miami, a city with a huge Hispanic population in an electoral battleground state that is likely to prove pivotal in 2016’s presidential vote.
He will host a town hall meeting that will be televised on Telemundo, a Spanish-language network.
The White House has argued that the law and history are on its side.
But that may mean little for millions of undocumented immigrants for whom protracted wrangling just means more uncertainty.
“I was intending to apply,” said 34-year-old Florida resident Ivan Reyes, who was brought to the United States when he was 10.
“They stopped it, now I can’t. I am in shock. All my friends have papers, I’m the only one who doesn’t.”
“I knew that something was going to happen, something always happens. Every time we are going to get something, something happens.”
Activists have warned political and legal reverses could make scare undocumented migrants, pushing them further into the shadows.
The court ruling could “confuse potentially eligible immigrants and undermine the success of these initiatives,” said Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center.
Arteaga acknowledged it is possible a post-2016 administration could overturn the amnesty, making him vulnerable to deportation or prosecution.
But it is a risk he is willing to take.
“I believe that is a possibility, but I also believe that any candidate that goes through with it will be committing political suicide.”
“The Latino population is getting bigger and bigger here in the United States,” he said. “If four million apply, they can’t take it away.
