Unrelenting rain has finally won as World Cup’s
Pool A match between Bangladesh and Australia in Brisbane has washed out
forcing the teams to share one point each.
Bangladesh and Australia were scheduled to meet for
their second match of the World Cup on Saturday.
The game was supposed to
start at 9:30am Bangladesh time but unyielding rain forced umpires Billy Bowden
and Kumar Dharmasena to call off the match after waiting till 12:45pm
(Bangladesh time) at the Gabba.
Cylone Marcia brought torrential rain to
the Brisbane area, where locals have been advised to stock up on supplies, and
the persistent downpour snuffed out any hope of even playing a minimum
requirement 20-overs-a-side contest.
"AUSvBAN is officially abandoned
with incessant rain making any play impossible," the International Cricket
Council (ICC) said on its Twitter feed.
The teams were awarded a point
each leaving both the sides with three points.
The ICC was trying to hold
the match on Saturday even if it was to be curtailed as there is no reserve day
for group matches.
The rain had even lessened somewhat around the
afternoon reviving the hope of match getting underway, but it was soon dashed as
the downpour returned again in full force.
Both the teams were off to
flier in their campaigns. Bangladesh crushed Afghanistan by 105 runs in their
first match while Australia thrashed England by 111 runs in their
opener.
New Zealand lead the Pool A with six points from three
matches.
Bangladesh head to Melbourne for their next match against Sri
Lanka on Thursday.
Australia will take on co-hosts New Zealand in
Auckland next Saturday.
