Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, who has been condemned
to death, filed on Thursday a review petition with the Appellate
Division of the Supreme Court.The petition has sought review of the death penalty verdict upheld earlier by the Appellate Division itself last year.
His lawyer Shishir Monir filed the petition on his behalf at 11:30am on Thursday, the last day of the 15-day timeframe from the day of issuance of death warrant, for submission of the review petition.
On Wednesday, five lawyers of Kamaruzzaman met him and discussed the matter.
Kamaruzzman, who was convicted of crimes against humanity, holds the position of assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Kamaruzzaman is in good health and hopeful of getting what his lawyers said justice this time.
Lawyer Tajul Islam on Wednesday expressed the hope that the Appellate Division would provide them the same scope and time that the highest court usually grants in other cases.
On 3 November, the Appellate Division upheld Kamaruzzaman’s death penalty giving a precise verdict.
Later on 18 February, the apex court published full text of the verdict and sent it to the International Crimes Tribunal-2 which handed down the judgement earlier.
The next day, there judges of the ICT-2 signed the copy of the death warrant and sent it to the central jail where it was read out in front of Kamaruzzaman.
